Now, it should be mentioned, he considered himself a pantheist at times (he greatly admired Spinoza.) but pantheism is functionally equivalent to atheism, especially in Spinoza and Einstein’s interpretation.

Einstein often received death threats for his very open and straightforward attacks on religion (considering how cagey he usually was in presenting his personal opinions, his straightforwardness on the one subject was by his own admission due to the rage and disgust religion inspired in him), a fact modern theists are determined to rewrite, just as they are trying to rewrite Hitler into an atheist when he was vociferously a christian.
